BEER NA BEER
First Brewed

Beer Na Beer was introduced in 1982 by Asia Brewery in the city of Cabuyao, Laguna in the Philippines. Asia Brewery had recently been established by Lucio Tan to compete with San Miguel Corporation, which had at that point already secured the dominant position in the Filipino beer market.

The beer was originally named Beer Hausen Pale Pilsen, and launched a fierce competition for share of the market with San Miguel Corporation. They responded with a beer called Lagerlite as well as another called Gold Eagle, which helped dampen the success of Asia Brewery’s main beer. In response, Asia Brewery secured the rights to Carlsberg in the Phillippines (a license which has since lapsed). They also reinvigorated the Beer Hausen Pale Pilsen brand by renaming it Beer Pale Pilsen in 1988.

This rebranding irked the San Miguel Corporation, whose flagship beer was known as San Miguel Beer Pale Pilsen. The company sued Asia Brewery for trademark infringement, and prevailed in court. As a result, Asia Brewery was forced to rebrand their flagship beer once again to Beer Na Beer, which had previously been their beer’s slogan. The new name means “It’s Beer Beer,” seemingly a reference to how authentic the quality of the product is.

In 2001, Asia Brewery reformulated Beer Na Beer, which now has a 6.0% alcohol by volume. The beer has helped Asia Brewery remain the number two brewery in the country, with 10% of the share of beer sales. Most of those sales come from Beer Na Beer.rggM na Lucio Tan still helms the company, and is estimated to be worth over $2.6 billion. San Miguel Corporation, however, has a near monopoly on the rest of the market, with an 88% share.
