Beerlao was created in 1973 by the Lao Brewery Company in Vientiane, Laos. The company was originally known as Brasseries et Glacières du Laos, and was founded as a joint venture between Lao and French businessmen in 1971. It took two years to build out the brewery, and had a capacity of 3 million liters per year when it began, producing the beer under its original name Bière Larue.
When the Democratic People’s Republic of Laos was established in 1975, the business fell into government control, and the beer’s name was changed to Bière Lao. Economic reforms began in 1986, spawning a wave of privitazation in the Lao economy. In 1993, the government released 51% of the business to foreign investment, with the Thai company Loxley Public Company Limited purchasing 25.5% and the Italian company Italian-Thai Development Corp. Plc purchasing the other 25.5%. Two years later the name of the beer changed again, to Beerlao, by which it is known today.
In 2002, the foreign investors pulled out of the operation, and full control of the company reverted to the Lao government. Dutch brewery giant Heineken then teamed up with its partner in Thailand TCC to purchase 50% of the company, with each partner controlling a quarter of the shares. By 2005, Heineken had bought out its partner and had 50% of the business and manegerial control. By 2017, Heineken had purchased 71% of the company.
During the early 2000s, the the company claimed to have a 99% share of the beer market in Laos. However, Singaporean beer Tiger has since moved into the market, which has somewhat eroded Beerlao’s dominance in the country. However, it still remains Laos’ most popular beer.
