Blue Moon was created in 1995 by Keith Villa, the brewmaster from the Sandlot Brewery (owned by Coors Brewing Company) at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. The first brewery to be located inside of a Major League Baseball stadium, Sandlot Brewery served as Coors innovation hub. One of its first offerings, Blue Moon was originally known as Belly Slide Wit. The product was the brainchild of Villa and marketer Jim Sabia. They built the Coors subsidiary Blue Moon Brewing Company, which launched with Belgian White as well as three other beers: Nut Brown, Honey Blonde, and a seasonal autumn ale called Pumpkin Ale. Eventually, the other three beers were discontinued as Belgian White achieved national success.
Blue Moon was one of the first commercially successful witbiers in the United States, a style of wheat ale originating from Belgium. Other popular beers in this style include Hooegarden, now made by Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Shocktop, now made by Tilray Brands. Although Blue Moon was originally given the label “Belgian White,” the Confederation of Belgian Breweries sued Coors in 1999, claiming the label was misleading given the beer’s domestic origin. Eventually, the two sides settled out of court, and changed the beer’s description to “Belgian-Style Wheat Ale.”
In 2005, Coors merged with Molson, Inc to become Molson Coors. The beer is now brewed in Coors’ Golden, Colorado facility, as well as Molson’s Montreal, Canada facility. In Japan, the beer is brewed and sold under license by Hakutsuru Sake.
