Crazy Stallion Malt Liquor, originally known as Crazy Horse Malt Liquor, was created in 1992 by Hornell Brewing Company, makers of Arizona Iced Tea. They contract brewed the beer with G. Heileman Brewing Company. In 1993, descendents of American Indian chief Crazy Horse sued Heileman over the user of their ancestor’s name. When Stroh purchased Heileman in 1996, they inherited the lawsuit, which dragged on even after Stroh sold its brewing business and lost the contract with Hornell. The lawsuit was settled, and Stroh presented the plaintiffs with the culturally significant gifts of seven thoroughbred horses, 32 Pendleton blankets, 32 braids of sweet grass and 32 twists of tobacco. Hornell now produces the beer under the name Crazy Stallion Malt Liquor with City Brewing out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
