Flying Fish Brewing Company was founded in 1995 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey by Gene Muller. At first it sold beer only online, a novel concept that helped the brewery gain notoriety. As it achieved recognition, Muller brought Andrew Newell on as a partner to help establish a permanent location, making it the only brewery at the time in South Jersey. It expanded its packaging line in 1996, allowing Flying Fish to distribute its beer in stores. By 2005 it was distributing to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., and it had a pub at Campbell’s Field, the home of the Camden Riversharks minor league baseball team.
In 2012, the company moved to a larger 45,000 square foot facility in Somerdale, New Jersey, which made Flying Fish the largest brewery in the state. The move also allowed them to triple their brewing output.
In 2016, Flying Fish was purchased by Elk Lake Capital, a Scranton, Pennsylvania based private equity firm led by James Lewandowski. The following year, Muller retired from the business, and Lou Romano was announced as the new president of Flying Fish. However in November 2020, Romano left the company, and Muller was reinstated as President, and according to his words, “Head Janitor.”
Flying Fish declared bankruptcy in the final weeks of 2023, with Elk Lake Capital listed in court documents as its biggest creditor. The documents showed that while the company had $1.3 million in assets, it owed nearly $10 million in liabilities. In early 2024, a bankruptcy auction took place, and Flying Fish’s intellectual property, including its brand, were sold to Guilford Hall Brewing for $152,500.
