Frio Beer was created in 2014 in Houston, Texas by Quality Brewers. The brand marks the first beer for the company, which also produces aguardiente, gin, vodka, and whiskey. It is owned by Celia Villanueva, whose parents founded the Licores Veracruz S.A. de C.V in Veracruz, Mexico in 1945. Celia joined the family business in 1970, and later moved to Houston in 1989 to start the Mexcor International business, which began to import the family’s liquor brands into the United States. In 2015, the distribution business was acquired by CEO Eduardo Morales, shortly after Celia Villanueva started Quality Brewers. In addition to Frio Beer, it also brews gin and vodka, also under the Frio brand name. Quality Brewers also imports aguardiante (a distilled spirit similar to rum) from Colombia.
The Frio beer is marketed as a low cost, low calorie, and low carb beer. Frio Beer is sold primarily in its home state of Texas, and previously had a map of Texas on its logo with the slogan “Brewed for Texas.” However in 2018, in an apparent attempt to widen its distribution footprint, the company changed the label design of Frio to a star, and now describes itself as “American Owned, American Brewed.” Despite the connection to Texas, the beer has been brewed since its inception in Memphis, Tennessee and LaCrosse, Wisconsin by City Brewery, one of the nation’s largest contract brewing facilities. It’s possible that the beer brewing brewed out of state is another reason for its rebranding as a more national brand.
At the peak of its distribution, the beer was available in the states of Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Utah.
