Gordon Biersch Brewing Company was founded in Palo Alto, California in 1988 by Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch. In 1995, the company accepted an $11.2 million investment from Las Vegas billionaire Lorenzo Fertitta, who became the controlling partner. In 1999, Gordon Biersch was acquired by Big River Breweries, a brewpub company based out of Chattanooga Tennessee. The resulting company later was jointly acquired with Rock Bottom Breweries in 2010 by Centerbridge Capital Partners, who named the new group CraftWorks Restaurants and Breweries. However, in 2020 CraftWorks went bankrupt, and was purchased by private equity group SPB hospitality.
