Lansing Brewing Company was founded in Lansing, Michigan in 2015 by Pat and Jennifer Gillespie. The brewery takes its name from a previous brewery in the city which was founded in 1898, but closed during prohibition. In 2013, Pat Gillespie claimed the name for the brewery, and began working on opening the brewery.

The brewery faced criticism in 2022 when it planned to host an event in support of Donald Trump called the “MAGA mixer.” After backlash, the company cancelled the event, and apologized on social media.

In 2024, the Gillespies sold 90% of the ownership of the company to Detroit Liquid Ventures, the beverage holding company founded in 2021 by Mark Rieth, former owner of Atwater Brewing.
