Leinenkugel’s beer brand was created in 1867 by Jacob Leinenkugel and John Miller in Chippewa Falls, a city located in Wisconsin, United States. Leinenkugel was a Prussian immigrant, and relied on recipes he brought from his homeland for most of the company’s products. Miller left the firm in 1884, and sold his stake to Leinenkugel. The Leinenkugel family remained as the owners of the brand until 1988, when solvency issues forced them to sell the firm. In that year, Leinenkugel’s was purchased by Miller Brewing Company, which at the time was a subsidiary of Philip Morris Companies Inc. By that time, the brewery had expanded beyond its Wisconsin roots, and had been marketing its light beer across the country. The brand acquired another brewery facility in 1995 from the former Valentin Blatz Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Miller later came under the ownership of South African Breweries (SAB) in 2002, and then became known as SABMiller. In 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company formed a joint operation in the united states called MillerCoors LLC, which Leinenkugel’s was organized under. When SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016, SABMiller’s stake in the joint venture was sold to Molson Coors to satisfy US Department of Justice regulators.
