Licher Privatbrauerei was founded in 1854 by Johann Heinrich Ihring, originally as the JH Jring Brewery, in Lich am Hardtberg, Germany. It merged with the nearby Gambrinus Brewery in 1923 to form the Jhring-Melchior KG Brewery, then later to Licher Privatbrauerei. In 1999, it was purchased by Holsten Group. Holsten was purchased in 2004 by Carlsberg Group, who immediately sold the König brand to Bitburger Braugruppe.
