Melvin Brewing was founded in Jackson, Wyoming in 2009 by Jeremy Tofte. Tofte had previously started a Thai restaurant in 2000 called Thai Me Up, and started the brewery out of the back before later adding a second location in nearby Alpine, Wyoming. By 2019, the brewery had four locations, including as far as Eureka, Missouri. In addition to their own brands, the brewery is a large contract brewer, including making the beers for the Lazy Dog Restaurant beer club.

Melvin Brewing faced criticism in 2017 after their brewer Kirk McHale groped a waitress at a nearby restaurant, which critics claimed was emblematic of the brewery’s culture. Tofte pushed back against the story in the press, and downplayed the incident. Tofte also pushed back against firing the brewer, though McHale did leave the company in 2018. The brewery also was criticized for their website, which had a header on their contact us page that said, “Show Us On the Doll Where Melvin Touched You.” By 2020, the company had a new CEO named Frank Magazine, who brought on a new Director of Brewing Operations and Director of Sales. The reputation of the brewery suffered, and in 2022 Melvin was sold to Roadhouse Brewing, a Certified B Corporation that is employee owned. In 2023, that company was renamed Pure Madness Brewery Group, which is now the parent company for both breweries. Later that year, the Eureka location of Melvin was rebranded as Freestyle Brewing Company.
