Miller Brewing Company was created in the year 1855 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was founded by Frederick Miller, who purchased the former Plank Road Brewery for $2300 after immigrating from Germany just one year prior. When Miller died in 1888 from cancer, he passed the brewery to his three sons Ernst, Emil, and Frederick II, along with his son-in-law Carl.
Miller grew to be one of the biggest breweries in Wisconsin throughout the first part of the twentieth century. In 1961, they purchased fellow Milwaukee brewer A. Gettleman Brewing Company, cementing their status as the biggest in the area. By 1966, the brewery had passed into the hands of Frederick Miller’s granddaughter, Lorraine John Mulberger, who was against alcohol. She sold the company to the chemical conglomerate W.R. Grace and Company, and three years later the sold the brand to tobacco giant Philip Morris Companies Inc, which outbid PepsiCo for the company and paid $130 million.
Later in 2002, it came under the ownership of South African Breweries (SAB), which became known as SABMiller. The deal was valued at $5.6 billion, and left Philip Morris with a 36% stake in the new company. In 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company formed a joint operation in the United States called MillerCoors LLC. In 2016, SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev for $107 billion. However, to satisfy antitrust regulators, AB InBev had to divest itself of many of its European and American assets earned from the sale, and so they sold their stake in Miller Coors to Molson Coors, who now owns those brands exclusively.
