Safari Beer was first brewed in 1977 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania by Tanzania Breweries Limited, which at the time was a subsidiary of East African Breweries Limited. However in 1979, the government of Tanzania nationalized the company, and it remained state-owned until 1993, when South African Breweries purchased a 50% stake in the company for $22.5 million. This was followed by a 20% stake by Diageo in 2002, as part of a share swap to consolidate control of the Tanzanian maarket. By 2013, the then-named SABMiller had a 57.5% interest in the company, and in 2016 SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, whose stake has now climbed to 64%.
