Saku Brewery was founded in Saku, Estonia (then a part of the Russian Empire) in 1820 by Graf Karl Friedrich von Rehbinder. von Rehbinder was a German nobleman and a major landowner in the area. In 1899, the brewery became a joint-stock company, and was renamed Saku Õlletehas. In 1940, Saku Brewery became nationalized by Soviet Estonia. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the brewery once again became privately owned, with 25% of the shares held by Swedish brewery Pripps and 75% owned by Baltic Beverages Holding. After they began to brew Carlsberg in Estonia on license in 2001, the Carlsberg Group became interested in the enterprise, and took over the company fully in 2008.
