Origin

Minnesota, United States

Schmidt Beer was started by Jacob Schmidt in 1900, when he purchased the St Paul Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1954, the brewery was sold to Pfeiffer Brewing Co. In 1972, Pfeiffer went bankrupt, and its assets were sold to G. Heileman Brewing. In 1987, Heileman purchased the rights to another brand called Schmidt, from the Christian Schmidt Brewing Company, founded in 1860 in Philadelphia. They marketed both simultaneously, tailoring the branding to match the market it was in. When Heileman was sold to Stroh in 1996, both brands’ assets went with it. Stroh sold the brand to Pabst in 1999.
