Singha Beer was first brewed in Bangkok, Thailand in 1934 by Boonrawd Sreshthaputra, who had received the title of Phraya Bhirom Bhakdi from King Prajadhipok. Boonrawd had previously operated a ferry service across the Chao Praya river, and when the local government began building bridges in the area he began looking for a new enterprise. In 1929, he got government approval to build Thailand’s first approval, and soon began touring Denmark and Germany to learn the trade. In 1933, he opened the Boon Rawd Brewery, and the following year bottle began rolling off the line.

In 1939, King Rama VIII, the king of Thailand, officially endorsed the beer, which allowed the company to include the royal Garuda symbol on its logo (Thailand’s version of the coat of arms). The branding also features a “Golden Mystical Lion,” which is considered to be the king of the Himmapan Forest in Thai literature.

The company expanded throughout the fifties and sixties, increasing its factory from less than 4 acres to over 22 acres. In 1970, the company began exporting the product abroad, first to Los Angeles which had a large Thai population.

Throughout the last half of the twentieth century, many large multinational breweries have made inroads into southeast Asia. However Singha remains the third most popular beer in the country, behind Boon Rawd’s other main product Leo and its competitor Chang Beer, made by Thai Beverage. Boon Rawd is still majority family owned and operated by third and fourth generation members of the Bhirom Bhakdi family. The company has also expanded beyond beer into soda, drinking water, and other soft drinks, as wel as bottling, glass packaging, real estate and supply chain management businesses.
