Spaten beer has a long history, going back to at least 1397 when Hans Welser is recorded as owning a brewery in Munich. The brewery changed hands several times over the next few centuries: to the Starnberger family in 1522, then to the Spatt family in 1622 (who renamed the brewery Spaten), then to the Sießmayr family in 1704. In 1807, it was purchased by Gabriel Sedlmayr, the Bavarian king’s royal brewmaster. In 1922, Spaten merged with Franziskaner Leistbräu (which had been owned by the same family since 1861) to form the Gabriel & Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG. In 1997, they again merged with Löwenbräu to form a joint stock company. In 2004, the company was purchased by InBev. In 2008, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired InBev, forming Anheuser-Busch InBev.
