Speight’s Beer was founded in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1876 by James Speight, Charles Greenslade, and William Dawson. In 1923, Speight’s merged with nine other breweries to become New Zealand Breweries. In 1977, New Zealand Breweries became Lion Breweries. In 1988, they purchased retailer LD Nathan to become Lion Nathan. In 2009, the company was purchased by Kirin Holdings for $3.5 billion.
