Stag Beer was first created in 1906 by the Griesedieck Western Brewery in Belleville, Illinois. In 1954, the brewery was sold to Carling. In 1979, Carling was sold to G. Heileman Brewing, which folded in 1996 and was sold to Stroh. Stroh’s debt from the purchase caused them to fail as well, and in 1999 they sold the Stag brand to Pabst Brewing Company.
