Tetley’s was founded in Leeds, England in 1822 by Joshua Tetley. In 1960, it merged with Walkers of Warrington to become Tetley Walker, and the following year merged with Ind Coope and Ansells to become Allied Breweries, at the time the world’s largest brewery group. In 1978, they again merged with J. Lyons to become Allied Lyons. In 1993, Carlsberg Group purchased a 50% stake in Allied Lyons, which was followed by a full purchase in 1998.
