Trio Stout was created in Tilburg, Netherlands in 1919 by Royal Dutch Brewery. The company was later taken over by rival Oranjeboom, which became a part of Allied Breweries in 1967. In 1981, that company renamed to Allied Lyons, and later Allied Domecq in 1994.

Belgian company Interbrew purchased the brand from Allied Domecq in 1995. Interbrew later merged with South American company AmBev in 2004 to become InBev, and when they bought Anheuser-Busch in 2007 they became known as Anheuser-Busch InBev.

In 2008, Anheuser-Busch InBev sold many of their brands, including Trio, to Dutch investment company Nimbus Investments. The group of brands were renamed United Dutch Breweries, which was resold to Egeria Investments in 2011, and then again to privatey equity firm Gimv in 2015. Finally, Gimv sold UDB to Brouwerij Martens in 2024.
