Wrexham Lager was founded in Wrexham, Wales, in 1881 by Ivan Levinstein and Otto Isler. During World War II, the brewery was bought by Ind Coope, which later merged with Tetley Walker and Ansells to become Allied Breweries in 1961. Allied later merged with J. Lyons and Co to become Allied Lyons in 1978, and then again with Carlsberg in 1992 to become Carlsberg-Tetley.

In 2002, Carlsberg ceased production of the beer, and a local Minister of Parliament named Martyn Jones bought the brand and building for £1. He failed to use the trademark, however, and in 2010 sold it to Mark Roberts and his brother Vaughan Roberts. They revived the beer and ran the brewery until 2024, when a majority stake was sold to Red Dragon Ventures, the joint venture and majority owner of Wrexham A.F.C. owned by Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and the Allyn family.
