Almanac Brewing Company was founded in 2011 in Alameda, California by Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan. The two had been in a homebrew club together, and were inspired by Alice Waters, the owner of Chez Panisse, who had a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. Their beers followed a similar pattern, with a constantly rotating series of small-batch beers with unique recipes. In 2016, the brewery opened a taproom in the Mission District of San Francisco, which was followed by another in Alameda’s former Naval station in 2018. The latter was accompanied by a 30,000 square foot production facility as well, which broadened their brewing capacity.

Later that year, Friedman, who had been acting as brewmaster, left the company, though he remained a partner in the business. Friedman was vague on his reason for leaving the company, but stated that “the time felt right for a change.”
