Mothers Brewing Company was founded by Jeff Schrag in Springfield, Missouri in 2011. Schrag had been a real estate speculator and publisher, and purchased the former Butternut Bread bakery in 2010, which had shut down the year prior. He soon brought on as brewmaster Brian Allan, who had been in the industry for 16 years and had been a judge at the Great American Brew Festival for over a decade, as well as Jeremy Wicks to lead the sales and marketing department. The brand quickly acquired a loyal following, and is now distributed throughout Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas.

By 2023, Schrag was looking to retire, and sold the business to Jeff and Lindsay Seifried. Jeff had been a former city councilman in the area, as well as mayor pro tem. The Seifrieds had no experience in the brewing industry, but at the time were members of the Springfield Area Chambers of Commerce. The couple had recently purchased a popular clothing store in the area, and were looking to purchase a brand that was central to the Springfield community.
