North Peak Brewing Company was founded in Traverse City, Michigan in 1997 by Jon Carlson, Greg Lobdell, and Chet Czaplicka. Carlson and Czaplicka had previously started the Grizzly Peak Brewing Company in 1995. Two years later, they added Lobdell on to the team to purchase a deserted candy factory and turn it into the brewery, and North Peak was born.
In 2008, Grizzly Peak and North Peak merged with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales to form Northern United Brewing Company. It is now owned by Carlson, Lobdell, Czaplicka, Jolly Pumpkin founder Ron Jeffries, and master brewer Mike Hall.
