Deep River Brewing Company was founded in 2013 in Clayton, North Carolina by husband and wife Paul and Lynn Auclair. The couple were engineers that had been homebrewing for about 8 years before opening the business. Lynn had worked previously as a packaging engineer at Toshiba, and also had a master’s in business administration, which she used to develop a statistical analysis of where to build the brewery based off of changing demographics in the area. Paul was a civil engineer who has acted as the company’s head brewer since its founding.

The brewery bills itself as “Johnston County’s First Legal Brewery,” a nod to its history amongst moonshiners. It is located in a former cotton spinning mill built in 1902 and located on Main Street in Clayton, and has a 15 barrel brewhouse that was intentionally built with room to increase the brewery’s capacity as it grew. The brewery is notable for their “Collaboration Without Representation,” which is released every January in limited quantities.
