Green Flash Brewing was founded in 2002 in Vista, California by husband and wife Mike and Lisa Hinkley. As craft beer in San Diego began to gain steam, the brewery grew, and in 2011 moved to a new 44,000 square foot facility in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego. In 2013, they added a $20 million facility in Virginia Beach, Virginia, marking an ambition to take the beer national.

The following year, the brand went international with a deal to partner with St. Feuillien Brewery in Belgium to distribute their beer throughout Europe. By the end of the year, they had begun selling beer in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and Singapore as well, and they had also closed on the purchase of Alpine Brewing in nearby Alpine, California.

By 2018, however, the tides had shifted, and Green Flash was forced to sell its Virginia Beach facility, stop distributing to 32 states, and cut 15% of its employees. In April, Comerica Bank foreclosed on the company’s $20 million debt, and sold Green Flash to a group of investors under the name of WC IPA LLC. The group consisted of new CEO Mike Hinkley, as well as four other members. In 2022, WC IPA sold Green Flash and its subsidiary Alpine to cannabis and beverage company Tilray Brands for $5.1 million.
