Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales was founded in Dexter, Michigan in 2004 by husband and wife Ron and Laurie Jeffries. Ron Jeffries had been studying brewing since since 1991, and brewing professionally since 1995, including at Grizzly Peak Brewing Co in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Focused on brewing sour beers, Jolly Pumpkin brews their beer exclusively in barrels using only wild yeast, which give them their wild character. At the time, it was the only 100% sour brewery in the country. While conceiving the brewery, Ron came up with the name Jolly Pumpkin while drinking beers on the porch with his wife; the name stems from his love of Halloween.

Since opening their original location in Dexter, Jolly Pumpkin has added taprooms in Detroit, Royal Oak, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, and East Lansing. The Royal Oak location, which opened in 2017, is a collaboration with Bastone Brewery, which occupies the other half of the space. All of Jolly Pumpkin’s locations also include a kitchen with food to pair with the sour beers.

In 2008, Jolly Pumpkin merged with Grizzly Peak Brewing Company and North Peak Brewing Company, both of which were at the time owned by Jon Carlson & Greg Lobdell, to become Northern United Brewing Company.
