Wells Beer was founded in 1876 in Bedford, England by Charles Well. It was originally known as Charles Wells Family Brewery, and later as Charles Wells Ltd. In 2006 the company, still family owned, merged with Young & Co’s Brewery to form Wells & Youngs, with the Wells family controlling a 60% stake. Wells later bought out Young’s share in 2011.
In 2017, the company announced it would sell its brewing business to Marston’s Brewery. Marston’s later merged with Carlsberg Group in 2020, with Carlsberg controling the majority stake in the business.
