Peroni is an iconic Italian beer brand that was created in 1846 by Francesco Peroni in Vigevano, Italy. Peroni was from a family of pasta makers, and moved to Vigevano to start his business. In 1864, the company opened a brewery in Rome, which was soon being run by Peroni’s son Giovanni. Francesco’s other son Cesare joined the company in 1887, and soon both were running the enterprise.
Peroni expanded in the 1920s and 1930s, purchasing several other breweries including Birra Cioci, Birra Livorno, and Partenope. In 1949, Francesco’s grandson Giacamo Peroni became the managing director, and by the following year, it was the largest brewery in Italy. In 1963, the company released Nasto Azzurro, which means “Blue Ribbon.” The beer commemorates the blue ribbon award that was given at the time for the fastest transatlantic ocean liner. The award had recently been given to Italian liner Rex. Nastro Azzurro is now Peroni’s flagship beer.
In 1988, Peroni purchased the Wührer beer brand from French company Danone, who had taken over the company only a few months prior. At the time, it was the oldest Italian brewery, but upon the sale Peroni closed down the brewing facility and kept only the brand. As part of the purchase, Danone received a 19.5% stake in Peroni.
In 2003, Peroni was sold to SABMiller. In 2016, SABMiller was itself purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev. As part of the deal to purchase the company, Anheuser-Busch InBev had to divest itself of several of the SABMiller properties in the United States and Europe. Consequently, in the United States Peroni was sold to Molson Coors, while in the rest of the world its rights were sold to Japanese company Asahi Holdings.
