Rhinegeist beer was created in 2013 in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio by Bob Bonder and Bryant Goulding. The pair were business consultants that worked together in San Francisco beginning in 2005. Bonder moved to Cincinnati in 2007, and in 2011 spoke with Goulding about starting a brewery in the city, which they felt was missing a craft beer brand. Goulding moved to the city the following year, and the taproom was built in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in 2013.

In 2015, the company expanded its brewing system, which tripled its production capacity. Later that year they also announced plans to build a production facility in Columbus, Ohio. Their line of craft ciders, Cidergeist, quickly followed. The brewery also hosts an annual beer festival called Rare Beer Fest, in which they invite brewers from around the world to bring their rarest beers to the brewery to be served.
