Boddingtons was created in Manchester, England in 1778, under the name of Strangeways Brewery by Thomas Caister and Thomas Fry. In 1832, Henry Boddington joined the company, and eventually became its sole owner in 1853. The company remained in his family for more than a century, although family ownership dwindled to about 40% by the 1930s. In 1969, Allied Breweries initiated a hostile takeover bid, which was thwarted by Whitbread plc, who raised their ownership stake from 13% to 23%. Whitbread eventually purchased the entirety of the company in 1989, and held it until 2001, when they sold all of their brewing interests to Interbrew. Interbrew later merged with AmBev in 2004 to form InBev. In 2008, InBev purchased Anheuser-Busch, and named the new company Anheuser-Busch InBev.
