Hacker Pschorr was created from the eventual merger of two closely related Munich breweries. Preustatt an der Hagkagasse dates back to at least 1417, but in 1738 it was purchased by Simon Hacker and renamed Hacker Brau. In 1797, Joseph Pschorr, who had some years earlier created the Pschorr brewery, gained control of the Hacker Brau when he married Therese Hacker. However, the two breweries were legally separate entities until they merged in 1972. In 1979, the brewery was purchased along with Paulaner by the Schörghuber Group to become Paulaner Brewery Group. In 2002, they took on a 30% investment by Heineken N.V.
