Portland Brewing Company was created in 1990 in Portland, Oregon by Fred Bowman, Art Larrance and Jim Goodwin. In 2004, they changed their name after original investor Robert Malcolm “Mac” MacTarnahan. In 2000, they merged with Saxer Brewing Company, and in 2004 the company was purchased by Pyramid Breweries. In 2008, Pyramid was bought by Magic Hat Brewery. In 2010, Magic Hat was sold to North American Breweries, a subsidiary of KPS Capital Partners, who stripped the company and sold their brands to FIFCO USA in 2012. In 2013, MacTarnahan’s rebranded its beers in market back to Portland Brewing, however in 2021 the brand was discontinued.
