Magnolia Brewing Company was founded in San Francisco, California in 1997 by Dan McLean. It quickly became a leader in the Bay Area craft brewing scene with its brewpub in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, and eventually expanded to another location in the Dogpatch.

In 2015, Magnolia filed for bankruptcy, and eventually was bought by New Belgium Brewing in 2017 for $2.7 million. Two years later, New Belgium itself was bought by Japanese brewery Kirin. In 2024, Kirin sold the brewery to local bar owner Kevin Kynoch, Brandon Phillips, and Brian Reccow.
