Lech Beer was founded in Poznań, Poland in 1980 by the Polish government. In 1993, the company was privatized, and Euro Agro Centrum became the primary shareholder. They later sold the company to South African Breweries in 1996, which became SABMiller in 2002 with the purchase of American brewery Miller.

In 2016, SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev. However, as a result of two separate actions by American and European regulatory authorities, they were forced to sell off their assets in those regions to Molson Coors and Asahi Holdings, respectively. Since Lech was being imported to the United States at the time of the sale, the rights to Lech in the United States went to Molson Coors, while they are retained by Asahi everywhere else.
