Dreher Brewery was founded in Budapest, Hungary in 1854 by Peter Schmidt. It was originally known as Kőbányai Serfőző Társaság, and in 1862 it was taken over by Anton Dreher (inventor of Vienna lager). In 1948, the brewery was nationalized by the Soviet-aligned Hungarian government, and remained state-owned until 1991, when it became a publicly traded company. In 1993, it was purchased by South African Breweries, and was renamed Dreher Sörgyárak Ltd four years later. When SAB purchased Miller in 2002, the parent organization became known as SABMiller. In 2016, SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, and to satisfy antitrust regulations in the European Union, its European assets (including Dreher) were sold to Asahi Holdings.
