Kalnapilis Brewery was founded in Panevėžys, Lithuania in 1902 by German Albert Foight, who originally named it Bergschlösschen. The name, which means “castle on a hill,” was translated in 1918 to Kalnapilis. In 1994, the brewery was sold to Baltic Beverages Holding, and in 2001 it was sold again to Bryggerigruppen, which changed its name to Royal Unibrew in 2005.
