18th Street Brewery was founded in Gary, Indiana in 2013 by Drew Fox. Fox had been a homebrewer since 2010, he had built a test batch facility in his backyard to begin refining his recipes, and quickly became a part of the active homebrewing scene in Gary. In 2013, he launched a kickstarter to turn his idea into a reality, and raised over $24,000. They then built their brewery in a 3,200 square foot space in an old dry cleaner. After outgrowing that space, 18th Street added a space 10 times the size in Hammond, Indiana. That facility now comprises their production facility and barrel program, while the space in Gary houses the company’s pilot system, taproom, and kitchen.

The name “18th Street” comes from the main thoroughfare in Pilsen, a neighborhood in the south side of Chicago, where Fox originally wanted to open the brewery. However, according to Fox, “the alderman was a dick. And we’re like, fine, we’re taking the name with us!” Instead, the company opened up in Gary, where Fox lived and where his children attended Indiana University.
