Catawba Brewing Company was created in 1999 in Glen Alpine, North Carolina by Billy Pyatt, his wife Jetta, and his brother Scott. Billy and Jetta started homebrewing in 1995, and later took their hobby professional. Their original equipment was made from used dairy equipment. They eventually closed the Glen Alpine location, moving to a bigger facility in Morganton, as well as two taprooms in Asheville and a brewery in Charlotte. In 2017, they purchased the Palmetto Brewing Company of Charleston, South Carolina. The company cited “increasing market consolidation, product proliferation and cost pressure” as reasons for the purchase.

In 2021, they were purchased by Made By The Water, a portfolio company financed by Wiregrass Equity Partners. Pyatt said that “Their business model, a great mix of tasting room retail and wholesale sales, almost exactly mirrors ours…They value our people, markets, customers, and most of all, our culture.” The following year, Made by the Water merged with New Orleans based Faubourg Brewing and shortly thereafter Catawba’s Morganton facility was closed and production was moved to the Faubourg production brewery. In August of 2023, the company closed the Catawba locations in Charlotte and Wilmington and fired their staff with no notice and no severance. Their location in Asheville is now the only one remaining.
