Garage Beer was introduced in 2018 in Covington, Kentucky by Braxton Brewery, owned by brothers Evan and Jake Rouse. The name derives from the origin story of Braxton Brewery – the Rouse brothers began the company in the garage of their childhood home. When they designed the beer, the company intended for it to be a lighter, more refreshing complement to their brewery’s core craft beer products.

Soon thereafter, Garage Beer began to overtake the majority of Braxton’s portfolio, and the beer was spun off into its own company in 2023. The Rouses retained a minority stake, but brand marketer Andrew Sauer became the President and primary owner. Sauer had previously worked for Jim Beam, and had taken note of the fact that light beer seemed to be an undersized portion of the craft beer industry. He became interested in Garage Beer after independently coming up with the brand name, before discovering that Braxton had already trademarked it. Sauer moved the new Garage Beer company’s headquarters to Cincinnati, Ohio, while still using Braxton’s facility in Kentucky as a contract production brewery for the brand. Since then, production has expanded to BrewDog Brewing in Ohio, Founders Brewing in Michigan, and City Brewing in Irwindale, California.

By November of 2023, Garage had become the number 1 craft light beer in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The success attracted additional investment in the rapidly growing brand, and in June of2024, football players Travis and Jason Kelce purchased a “significant” stake in the beer, making them the largest investors. The move marked the second alcohol investment by Travis Kelce, who had previously invested in the ready-to-drink canned cocktail brand Casa Azul Tequila Soda.
