Grain Belt beer is a beloved brand that was created in 1893 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Originally owned by the Minneapolis Brewing Company, it quickly became a local favorite in the Twin Cities area. Minneapolis Brewing was created in 1890 from the merger of F.D. Noerenberg Brewery, John Orth Brewing Company, Heinrich Brewing Association, and Germania Brewing Association. Three years later, the Golden Grain Belt Old Lager was produced for the first time.

After purchasing Storz Brewery of Omaha, Nebraska in 1967, Minneapolis Brewing Company changed its name to Grain Belt Breweries, and it was soon the 18th largest brewery in the United States. But fortunes quickly shifted, and in 1975, the brewery closed. The Grain Belt brand was then purchased by G. Heileman Brewing Company, based in La Crosse, Wisconsin the following year. The new owner neglected the brand, and the company began to falter in the late 1980s. Production soon moved to its La Crosse facilities.

A group of investors approached Heileman about purchasing its Schmidt brand, but the company declined to sell; instead, it offered them Grain Belt as a compromise. The investors formed a new company, which in a nod to the history of Grain Belt was also named Minneapolis Brewing Company, and they took possession of the brand in 1991. They enjoyed a brief revival of success, with its sales peaking in 1996. However in 2002 the company went bankrupt, and Grain Belt was purchased by August Schell Brewing Company of New Ulm, Minnesota.
