Labatt beer was created in the year 1847 in London, Ontario, Canada, by John Kinder Labatt and Samuel Eccles. The brewery was originally known as Labatt and Eccles, until 1854 when Labatt bought out his partner’s share and renamed it London Brewery. The brewery was later renamed again to Labatt Brewery, and in 1945 it went public.
For decades, Labatt was the most popular beer in Canada, although by the late eighties it was jockeying for first place frequently with Molson. In 1995, Labatt was acquired by Interbrew, which merged with AmBev in 2004 to form InBev. In 2008 InBev merged with Anheuser-Busch, and the US Justice Department became concerned about the amount of market power the sale would bring in the United States. As part of a deal to let the merger go through, the rights to sell Labatt in the United States were sold to FIFCO.
