Modern Times is a well-known craft brewery and beverage company that was created in 2013. The brand was born in San Diego, California by Jacob MacKean. In 2017, the company sold 30% of its shares to an employee stock ownership plan, and by 2020 the brand had seven taprooms and distribution across 11 states.

As the company grew, allegations that the workplace was hostile began to emerge. When Brienne Allan encouraged women in the beer industry to share their stores of sexual harassment, over a dozen women came forward claiming favoritism, harassment, and retaliation. MacKean resigned from the company in 2021 in the ensuing backlash. The brand never fully recovered, and the following year the company went bankrupt. The court auction resulted in a widely watched public sale, with Maui Brewing acting as the stalking horse bidder. Anaheim brewery Brewery X initially won the auction, bidding $20 million and putting down a $500,000 security deposit. North Carolina based brewery TRU Colors bid $1 million more, but Brewery X also pledged to fully fund the deal within 7 days, and close within two weeks. When Brewery X failed to do that, they forfeited their deposit, but TRU Colors also backed out, leaving Maui as the eventual winners with $15.3 million. Later, Maui changed its name to Craft ‘Ohana.
