Steel Reserve is a popular beer brand that was first introduced in 1994 by the McKenzie River company, founded in 1987 by Joseph Wessinger. Wessinger started the company to follow in the footsteps of his great great grandfather, Pacific Northwest brewing legend Henry Weinhard. The company ended up focusing on creating malt liquor and other high gravity beers, making Steel Reserve a perfect play for them. Early on, the brand achieved recognition when they hired punk band The Ramones, by then at the end of their career, to write three jingles for Steel Reserve. The success of the beer led Anheuser-Busch to adopt the term “High Gravity” in its Hurricane Malt Liquor, as Steel Reserve had by then popularized the term in American culture. Several other brands have since followed with the use of the term.
In 2006, McKenzie River sold the brand to SABMiller along with the energy beer brand Sparks for $215million. Miller had already been producing both beers for McKenzie River under contract, and the beers were using the same distributor network as well. In 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company formed a joint operation in the united states called MillerCoors LLC. When SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016, SABMiller’s stake in the joint venture was sold to Molson Coors to satisfy regulators.
