Stegmaier beer was first brewed in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania by the Baer & Stegmaier Brewery, founded by Charles Stegmaier and his father-in-law George Baer. The brewery was later renamed the Stegmaier brewery in 1897. The brewery was shuttered in 1974 by Stegmaier’s great-great grandson Ed Meier, and the brand was sold to Lion Brewing. In 2022, the brand was purchased by Susquehanna Brewing, which was founded by Meier and his son Fred in 2010.
