Woodchuck Hard Cider was created in 1991 by the The Joseph Cerniglia Winery in Proctorsville, Vermont, founded by Joseph Cerniglia and Barry Blake. The brand initally operated out of the main winery, but as production increased, the company moved Woodchuck to its own facility in Springfield, Vermont in 1996, as it was spun off to become the Vermont Hard Cider Company. Later, production again moved to an even bigger facility in Middlebury in 2000.

In 2012, the Woodchuck brand was purchased by Irish beverage company C&C Group, which owned cider brands Magners, Bulmers, and Gaymers. The deal was valued at $305 million, and within two years the company had built a $34 million cidermaking facility for the brand. In 2021, C&C sold the brand to Vermont-based Northeast Drinks Group for just $20 million. The group was formed by David Mandler and other investors with the intention of purchasing Woodchuck and bringing it back to Vermont ownership.
