Against the Grain Brewery was founded in 2011 in Louisville, Kentucky by Jerry Gnagy, Sam Cruz, Adam Watson, and Andrew Ott. The four had worked together as brewers at Bluegrass Brewing Company, which they describe as, “one of the grayest Louisville breweries of all time.” Dissatisfied, they resolved to start a brewery that would bring more color to the beer scene in Louisville, and sketched out a business plan on a legal pad. What followed was their first location, Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse, which had a Victorian style 15 barrel brewhouse.

As they reached their capacity at their original location, Against the Grain added a second facility in downtown Louisville, this time with a 20 barrel brewhouse. In 2021, they added a third location, this time called the Against the Grain Sandwich Emporium. However, by the following year, that location was shut down.

Against the Grain can now be found in 43 states, and over 25 countries around the world.
