The Alaskan beer brand was created in 1986 in Juneau, Alaska. It was founded by Geoff and Marcy Larson, who started the brewery with a mission to celebrate the unique flavors and wild landscapes of Alaska. In 2012, the company established an employee stock ownership plan, with 10% of the company going to employees. The remaining 90% is held by the Larsons, as well as nearly 90 other investors.
