Alivaria Brewery was founded in 1864 in Minsk, Belarus by Rohlya Frumkinova. In 1917 the brewery was nationalized by the Belarussian government. It remained state-owned until 1994 when privatization resulted in it becoming a joint stock company. In 2008, Carlsberg group purchased a majority share in the business. They currently hold about 2/3rd of the stock, with most of the rest belonging to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Today, Alivaria is the number one beer in Belarus.
